Ingredients

  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • ½ cup jaggery
  • 1 cup makhana
  • ½ cup chopped dry fruits
  • Cardamom powder ½ tbsp
  • Poppy seeds 1 tsp
  • 2-3 tbsp ghee
  • Salt 1 pinch
  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1 cup water
  • Sugar 2 tbsp
  • Orange and green food color 2 drops each

Directions

  • Grind the coconut in a mixture and take 1 cup of this grated coconut. Dry roast the makhanas till it becomes warm and remove in a plate. Now add 1 tsp ghee, poppy seeds, roast for a minute and add jaggery. Add coconut and chopped nuts, mix well.
  • Grind the makhanas in a mixer and add it to our modak mixture. Add cardamom and nutmeg, mix well. Switch off the stove and let it cool.
  • In a kadai add 1 cup water, ½ tsp water, 1 pinch salt and 1 tbsp ghee. Once water boils, switch off the gas and add rice flour to it. Mix well and cover it with a lid. Now mix the rice flour into a dough. Add water when required. Make a smooth dough and take some dough aside to add food color.
  • Add orange and green food color to one part of the dough. Now flatten it as shown in video and use the rice flour or ghee to make the shape of modak. Fill it with the modak mixture and fold it to cover the edges. It should form the shape of modak. Repeat the same process with the rest of the dough.
  • Now take an idli streamer or a big kadai. Add some water and keep a stand and then keep a steamer pan. Oddy Ecobak non-stick liners can be used to coat our Steamer vessel. This will help the steam to seep into our modaks and also Oddy Ecobake is non-sticky and hence steaming the modaks becomes a hassle-free process.
  • Let it cook for 10-12 mins and check whether it is cooked. Remove the modak and now our Steamed modak is ready to serve.
