Ingredients
- Wheat flour - 1 cup (250 ml)
- Suji - 2 tbsp
- Salt to taste
- Smoking hot oil - 2 tbsp
- Water as required
- Ghee - 2 tbsp
- Shredded fresh coconut - 1 & 1/4 cup
- Jaggery - 2/3 cup
- Poppy seeds - 1 tsp
- Cardamom powder - 1/4 tbsp
Directions
- Take wheat flour into a large plate. Add suji, salt and mix it well. Add heated oil in it and mix well. Add water in this mixture gradually, and knead a little thick dough like puri.
- Transfer the dough into a bowl and rest it for 10-15 minutes. Take a pan, heat it well on medium flame of gas. Add ghee into the pan and then quickly add shredded fresh coconut into it. And fry it for a minute.
- Add jagerry in that coconut and mix it well until jagerry completely melts. Add poppy seeds in it and mix well. This mixture is called as 'Saaran'.
- Cook this saran on low flame until the melted jagerry completely dries down. Turn off the gas. And take out all the 'Saaran' out of the pan, into the plate. Let it cool down properly.
- Take the dough and knead it once again to make it even. Take a small portion of dough and roll it into a puri. Make sure that puri is thinner at the edges and a little bit thick at middle portion.
- Stuff the 'Saaran' at the center of the puri and make the shape of modak. The raw 'Modak' will be ready. You can cook all the 'Modak' by using steamer. But if in case steamer is not available then follow the steps mentioned below.
- Take a vessel filled with a little water and place a sieve on it. Place Oddy Ecobake Nonstick Liner into the sieve.
- Transfer 7-8 'Modak' at a time into the sieve. Cover it with a plate or lid and steam on medium flame for 10-12 minutes. Open the lid and take all the 'Modak' out into a plate.
- Traditional Maharashtrian 'Wheat flour Modaks' are ready.
