Traditional Maharashtrian ‘Puran Dinde’

Puranache dind is a traditional Maharashtrian recipe. It is a very easy and simple recipe. It is made as naivedya on the day of Nagpanchami in many households in Maharashtra. Do try this different recipe at home and let us know your experience.

Ingredients

 

  • Chana dal - 1 cup
  • Water - 4 cups
  • Jaggery - 1 cup
  • Ghee - 1 tbsp
  • Wheat flour - 1 cup
  • Water - As needed
  • Smoking hot oil - 1 & 1/2 tbsp
  • Salt to taste and Cardamom powder - 1/4 tbsp

Directions

 

  • Wash chana dal properly and keep it aside. Add water into a pan or kadhaai and boil it at high flame. Cook the dal at medium flame until it cooks well.
  • Now at low flame, add jaggery into this cooked dal and mix well until jaggery melts completely. Mash this mixture in kadhaai only, with the help of potato masher until its texture becomes granular.
  • Turn off the gas. Stuffing mixture will be ready. It's called 'Puran'. Close the lid of kadhaai and keep it aside. Let the Puran cool down at room temperature.
  • Take wheat flour on a large plate. Add salt and heated oil in it and mix well. Then add water in this mixture gradually, and knead a little thick dough like puri.
  • Transfer the dough into a bowl and rest it for 5-7 minutes. Take the dough and knead it once again to make it even. Take a small portion of dough and roll it into a puri.
  • You can decide the thickness of the puri as per your choice. Stuff the Puran at the center of the puri and fold it from all four sides. The raw 'Dind' will be ready.
  • You can cook all the 'Dinde' by using a steamer. In case, steamer is not available then take a vessel filled with a little water and place a sieve on it.
  • Place Oddy Ecobake Nonstick Liner into the sieve. Transfer 4-5 'Dinde' at a time into the sieve. Cover it with a plate or lid and steam on medium flame for 10-12 minutes.
  • Open the lid and take all the 'Dinde' out onto a plate. Traditional Maharashtrian 'Puran Dinde' are ready to serve.
